They put out an invitation for people to send in comments on video on the topic "The role America should be playing in the world is …". Visalia Friends Meeting took this as an opportunity to make a statement speaking for the whole meeting. Here is the script that was accepted at the January 2003 Meeting for Business and filmed after the meeting the same day. Watch for the show on Direct TV or Dish Network. (Each audio clip is spoken by a different person.) Hello, we are the Visalia Friends Meeting in Visalia California. The very basis for democracy is the belief that "all men are created equal"...all people have equal value in the eyes of God. But too often we act as though only American lives count. We were devastated when 3000 people were killed on September 11. But we killed more civilians than that in Afghanistan and we are about to kill many thousands more in Iraq. Our founding principles should guide our national policy. We must affirm our belief in the value and dignity of all people by our actions. --We must stop installing and backing tyrants. --We must stop blocking treaties that put value on human life and the environment: like the treaties against torture, genocide, and global warming. --We must stop being the world's arms merchants. --We should be the world's peacemakers. --We must build rather than cripple the United Nations. We will have a safer world when we realize we are one with all the peoples of the world. It is not "us" versus "them." We are them and they are us.
