EPLO
Statement on the Terrorist Attacks in the US - 28 September 2001
Statement
on the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon
and the civilian aircraft, by the European Peace-Building Liaison
Office (EPLO) and its member organizations:
We
mourn the tragic loss of life in the USA and we would like to express
our sympathy and solidarity with the families and friends of the
victims. We condemn such attacks on human beings.
We
call on the USA, the EU to safeguard the innocent and avoid action
that will only create further civilian casualties. We must not begin
a cycle of fear, revenge and hate. The international community should
seek justice not vengeance by working to bring those who perpetrate
such acts to account under the rule of law.
All
countries share the joint responsibility not only to bring these
people to justice but also to prevent an escalation of the conflict.
Such an escalation could endanger the lives of millions and risks
becoming counterproductive. It could lead to a further polarisation
of our world at a time when we should be striving for a common commitment
to security, human rights and peace.
As
conflict prevention NGOs we would like to emphasize the importance
of preventing terrorist attacks in the future. We must redouble
our efforts to overcome the political, social and economic imbalances,
which serve the terrorists as pretext for their attacks and we should
enhance dialogue between different cultures and religions. A more
inclusive international community will reduce the opportunities
for terrorists to find support for their objectives and eventually
to commit their atrocious acts.
