[The Lord of Silence: general index]

23    Seemly Listening

Good and wise it is
to stand in silence
before the Lord.
It is not he
who does not know
what oppresses you,
what you want and need
to grow in spiritual stature,
but you.
So then it suits
the believer
to stand in daylong
seemly listening
to His will,
to His wisdom.
Yes, ask for
those holy motions
which rise on the wings of prayer
to Heaven,
without vain distractions.

Susello di Ghiffa, 10 VIII 1991

May we look upon our treasures, the furniture of our houses, and our garments, and try whether the seeds of war have nourishment in these our possessions.

John Woolman, Journal.
