WORDS/CONCEPTS ABOUT “THINKING GLOBALLY”
commons: any primary source which is a shared and basic need of the community of life, such as the air we breathe and the water we drink; that range of sources which are necessary to life and should be collectively owned, but which are rapidly being enclosed: privatized, traded in the market, and abused.
sustainability: a state of the earth and its life that is arranged and balanced so that it may go on indefinitely.
earth democracy: a definition of democracy based on creating living economies that protect life on Earth and provide basic needs and economic security to all. It is based on living democracy, which is inclusive. The Earth Democracy Movement is a commitment to go beyond the crisis of economic injustice and inequality, ecological ' non-sustainability, the decay of democracy and the rise of terrorism. Earth Democracy provides an alternative world-view in which humans are embedded in the Earth family. -- (This term was coined by Vandana Shiva and farmers of India.)
WORDS/CONCEPTS ABOUT "ACTING LOCALLY"
bioregion: A natural region defined by its ecological coherence: distinct geological formations, climatic conditions and ecology of plants, animals and humans. (term coined by Peter Berg, of Planet Drum)
watershed: all the land which contributes runoff to a particular water body; drainage for a specific stream or river.
biodiversity: the variability among living organisms, including land based and aquatic ecosystems: diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems.
permaculture: a sustainable design system (usually including growing food for humans and other life) stressing the harmonious interrelationship of humans, plants, animals and the Earth -- (term coined by Bill Mollison & David Holmgren, Australia)
