FALL, 2000: Volume 5 Issue 3

Upcoming CPT Delegations

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) is recruiting participants for our upcoming peacemaking delegations to the Middle East and Chiapas, Mexico. The changing political scene in both these areas is impacting conditions on the ground. In the West Bank city of Hebron, tensions on the streets have increased in the weeks following the failed Camp David summit. In Chiapas, opposition party victories in state and national elections promise a resumption in peace negotiations, but will displaced villagers soon be able to return home in safety?

Also planned for Fall, 2000: CPT delegation to the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, where, despite opposition by a widely-based coalition of groups, the U.S. Navy has resumed practice bombing raids with live ammunition. Contact CPT’s Chicago office today to join the November teams or for further information on the Vieques delegation.

Middle East: November 14-27, 2000; February 9-21, May 25-June 6, and July 27-August 8, 2001. Delegations will meet with Israeli and Palestinian peace and human rights workers and then join with CPT’s long-term team in Hebron to document cases of Palestinian families whose homes and land are threatened with demolition or confiscation by Israeli authorities. Cost is $1800 US.

Chiapas, Mexico: November 17-29, 2000; February 19-March 3, May 14-26, and July 18-30, 2001. Delegates will learn about issues of injustice underlying the conflict in this southern Mexican state and meet with villagers facing ongoing violence and harassment from soldiers and paramilitary groups. Cost is $1000 US.

Vieques, Puerto Rico: Fall, 2000, dates to be announced. CPT delegation will support groups challenging the U.S. military presence, and meet with local fishers, church representatives, and military spokespersons. Cost is $925 US.

Christian Peacemaker Teams is a program of Brethren, Quaker and Mennonite Churches. It is a faith-based group that seeks participants for all delegations who are interested in human rights work, committed to nonviolence, and willing to participate in team worship and reflection. The delegation experience culminates in a nonviolent public witness that challenges structural violence. Delegates should have plans to share about the trip upon return to their home communities and congregations.

Cost covers round-trip airfare from a designated U.S. or Canadian city, all on-ground travel, two meals a day, simple accommodations, and all honorariums and delegation fees. CPT Urgently Needs More Spanish-speakers

CPT has an ongoing project in Chiapas, Mexico, has been active in Vieques, Puerto Rico, and would like to consider working in Colombia, but is experiencing a lack of volunteers, especially of those with Spanish language skills. Applications are still open for the year-end CPT training — but need to be sent in very soon. Please contact CPT at the address below.

A reminder: Friends who wish to participate in CPT as FPTP-sponsored volunteers may apply to the Elise Boulding Fund for Peace Team Work.
