Richmond is located on the border between Indiana and Ohio, about 45 minutes from Dayton, OH and 90 minutes from Indianapolis, IN.
Richmond has a population of about 38,000. It is the county seat of Wayne County, and is the shopping center for many of the surrounding communities.
The city started in 1806, with many Quakers among the first settlers. It was a major stop on the National Road, which led from Baltimore to St. Louis. Before the Civil War, Richmond was on one of the routes of the Underground Railroad. During the 1800's, Richmond became an industrial center, with many small factories, as well as a railroad center.
Steam threshers were built in Richmond during the late 1800's. Soon after the turn of the century,14 different brands of automobile were manufactured in Richmond. Lawnmowers, pianos, roller skates and phonograph records were also well-known Richmond products. Current industries include automotive parts, CD's, insulation, pet foods, aluminum products, plastics, and baked goods. Richmond is also a major shopping center for the area.
Richmond offers a variety of churches and cultural advantages, with Earlham College, Earlham School of Religion and Bethany Theological Seminary nearby. The city is known for the arts, has a symphony orchestra, an opera company, a civic theater and museums. Richmond also has a beautiful park system.
