Friends Meeting of Washington
Community Action Opportunities
Members and attenders of Friends Meeting of Washington have
found practical, effective ways of working together to learn from
the community we're in as we become a more supportive neighbor.
American Friends Service Committee
Middle Atlantic Region
Washington DC Area Program
This project is finding ways for people to take advantage of non-violence programs made available in community settings. Participants can find out what a Listening Project is and learn to take part. Opportunities are available to support programs such as "Help Increase the Peace," held in the D.C. schools. Meet Friends from area meetings and share experiences with people active in the wider D.C. community. Information about this project can be found at AFSC-DC.
Housing for Low-Income Families
Friends have done something concrete about housing problems! Please consider a longer term commitment to Friends Non-Profit Housing Corporation, a group of Washington-area Quakers who organized Friendly Gardens, an 84-unit low-income complex. Some background in business or finance is useful but not required. Now is the time to get involved in planning a second project.
Hunger and Homelessness
Join with the Hunger & Homelessness Task Force in visiting, feeding and helping out at shelters and soupmobiles. The Task Force is an experienced group, motivated and knowledgeable about the work at hand. A separate page is available which lists current projects.
Peace and Social Concerns
The Peace and Social Concerns Committee focuses on District activities - city council matters (death penalty, gun control, environment), and with the many diverse groups that make up our neighborhood. Educational projects at the nearby Marie Reed school are an example of this involvement.
Personal Aid
Members of the Personal Aid Committee assist those in the Meeting community who are ill or have other specific needs. Transportation help is given to people wishing to attend Meeting events. The committee needs volunteers who like to do practical tasks with a personal touch.
Senior Center
The Senior Center meets on Wednesday afternoons, providing company and conversation for area seniors. Volunteer lecturers are welcome to share their own slides and travel adventures.
Mary Jane Simpson Scholarship Fund
Every year scholarships are awarded by the committee overseeing this fund to send District of Columbia High School students to college. Contributions may be made to Friends Meeting of Washington and noted to the M. J. Simpson Scholarship Fund.
Work Camps - Hands-On Experience
Weekend youth workcamps occur regularly throughout the year and need adult and/or family participation. This might be the weekend getaway you really enjoy! Workers spend Friday evening through mid-day Sunday cooperating on clean-up, repair and other jobs. For more information: Washington Quaker Workcamps .
Representatives to Community Organizations
FMW maintains relations with community organizations through appointed representatives. These organizations include the Council of Churches of Greater Washington and our Advisory Neighborhood Commission. To find out what these groups are doing, consult the current committee list for the names of representatives.
