Questions About the Environment from Friends Energy
Project
Friends and the Environment
some suggestions for corporate discernment
These questions come from the answers I’ve heard Friends state over
the past 6 years. If there seem to be a disproportionate number of questions
about scientists, it is because Friends give so many answers about scientists.
Before we prepare answers about the environment, perhaps we can listen
to the current understanding of Friends.
Worship sharing in order to hear the current understanding of Friends:
1. What is our understanding of the state of the environment?
-
Are climate change and biodiversity loss the serious issues, or are there
other more serious considerations?
-
Is the environment improving or worsening?
-
Do I want to change for the environment, future generations, people today,
another reason?
-
What generation do I believe will first see significant environmental changes?
-
What authority do I refer to? How do I react to scientific authority? Some
Friends say they credit reports of climate change made by native peoples
more than reports by scientific bodies. How do I react to these sources?
Other referred authorities? How does my economic or social class color
my understanding?
-
Does scientific consensus exist? How do scientists communicate consensus?
Is it mine to accept or mine to disagree/agree with? Does my understanding
begin with the ideas scientists agree on?
-
Am I more interested in globalization, the military, and large corporations
than environmental degradation? If so, why? What is the connection
-
What are my values? What aspects of my interest in the environment are
described in current testimonies? What aspects seem separate from any existing
testimony
2. What feelings arise when we discuss the environment
-
How has my spirit been affected by environmental trends?
-
Are the problems too large, or do solutions exist?
-
Must we choose between human concerns and environmental concerns?
-
What feelings come up when I think about changing my life?
-
If I live with less, will I experience deprivation?
-
Do I feel guilt? Should I feel guilt?
