Relative Danger of Energy Sources

Nuclear Power

5. How many have already died from US nuclear power plants in normal operation?
< 100          100 – 1,000           1,000 – 10,000        10,000 - 100,000       > 100,000
A typical coal power plant releases much more radioactivity into the environment than does a nuclear power plant.

US nuclear reactors now operate near 90% capacity (they are running 90% of the time), as plant improvements since Three Mile Island have decreased the time needed for refueling, and for maintenance and accidents. This high capacity is an indication of fewer problems, minor and major.
