Meeting for Holding in the Light:
For a long time now Christine Oliger has had a leading
that she now feels ready to pursue. She is now leading
a month meeting for holding in the light. She will
have a note book in the gathering room where people
can write their joys and concerns (as short or long
as they wish). It will also list the next Meeting
for holding in the Light date. At the Holding in
the light meeting, the book will be read and the
participants will be asked to focus on holding the
messages in the light. Christine plans to hold this
the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Meetinghouse,
7-8pm. Members of the Evergreen Worship group have
offered to help open and close up the building.
Window Sealers Needed this Saturday, December 12th
from 9 AM - 11 AM
Please join the property committee applying caulk
and plastic to the windows in the first day school
rooms this coming Saturday morning. Help us make
the space more energy efficient and cozy for the
kids.
Learn About Financing of the New Meetinghouse
The Coordinating Committee is presenting two sessions
where you can learn about the financial issues
associated with the new meetinghouse. Each session
will take one hour. Dylan Steinberg, clerk of the
Coordinating Committee, will describe four variables
to be considered when paying for the new meetinghouse.
Friends who attend one of these sessions will get
a copy of the drafts and budgets produced by the
Finance Committee to explain the variables.
Dates for these sessions are: Tuesday, December
22 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, January 3 after the community
lunch.
Giving to the Meeting
Friends, we are nearing the end of the year, when
many people make their annual contributions to
Chestnut Hill Meeting and other organizations.
Normally, we receive about 60% of our contributions
in November and December, which is about $40,000
of our current budget. Your check now will ease our
concerns about meeting our new budget.
Friends often ask "how much should I give?" Based
on the number of members and attenders contributing
in the past, we need to receive an average of $868
per year from each member-contributor household,
and an average of $338 from each attender-contributor
household. We understand that there is a range of
financial circumstances within our Meeting community.
Please do not be embarrassed to give less than these
amounts if your circumstances dictate. We hope that
all Friends will participate in the financial life
of the Meeting by making some contribution; even
a small gift helps to reduce the average contribution
that's needed.
Contribution envelopes are available in the office
(ask Dan or Dona) and on the guest book table.
Also:
1. In January, we plan to send out receipts for
all gifts received. If you intend to claim an income
tax deduction, you will need a receipt for gifts
of $250 or more. If you do NOT want a receipt, please
let Dan know so that we can save on printing and
postage.
2. If you are making a year-end contribution towards
the capital campaign for the new meetinghouse, please
make your check payable to "Chestnut Hill Friends
Meetinghouse Project" and address your envelope
to the attention of the campaign committee.
Open Studio Exhibition
CHFM attender Todd Kimmell would like to invite members
and attenders of Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting
to an open studio exhibition on Sunday, December
13, after meeting, at his new studio across the
street from CHFM. There is no public parking there,
and Friends are requested to simply stroll across
to the back of 133 East Mermaid Lane to attend.
In the exhibition, ZOUAVES, DEVILS & SASS, Todd
has taken tiny political cartoons printed on envelopes
during the American Civil War, digitally restored
them, and has enlarged them in a way that takes on
a surprising, somewhat pop art feel. Nearly totally
unknown to modern popular culture, these images show
the passions of that moment in time in single panels
that stand on their own, visually, but should be
seen collectively if possible. Several of the images
convey a moment of emancipation that has resonated
with the African American community, and many of
the images seem to speak in very different ways to
a broad spectrum of people.
Todd can be reached at todd@mermaidlanestudios.com or at 267 269 1606
Slippery Snow and Insidious Ice are on the way.
Please consider signing up for a week or two of snow
shoveling standby coverage for the meeting sidewalks
and steps. Sign up sheet on the bulletin board,
shovel and salt on the back porch. Priority is
front and rear entrance within 24 hours.
Fire makers.
Anyone interested in taking turns making and tending
fires for the 10:30 AM meeting for worship, please
contact Irene McHenry, pyrology coordinator.
Heifer Holiday Gifts Fundraiser
You're invited to give a Heifer donation in honor
of at least 1 person on your holiday gift list.
You make a donation of "an animal" to
Heifer, and give your recipient a Heifer gift card
announcing your gift. Suggestions for token gifts
to give to your recipients to represent your donation
will also be available. (For example, if you're
giving a donation of bees, honey will be available
for you to buy to represent your gift.) A table
will be set up the 3rd Sunday of Dec where you
can choose an animal donation and get a Heifer
gift card. See Sarah Whitman for details.
Art Show
Mark your calendars for February 14 through 21 as
the annual Chestnut Hill Art Show. Setup will be
on February 13. More information to come

Saturday 12 December – Hanukkah - No Film
Showing
Saturday 9 January - Concrete, Steel and Paint: A
Film about Crime, Restoration and Healing
Co-Directors/Producers: Cindy Burstein and Tony
Heriza
Panel Discussion: Filmmakers and a Criminal Justice
Panel
About the film: When men in a prison art class agree
to collaborate with victims of crime to design a
mural about healing, their views on punishment, remorse,
and forgiveness collide. At times the divide seems
too wide to bridge. But as the participants begin
to work together, mistrust gives way to genuine moments
of human contact and common purpose. Their struggle
and the insights gained are reflected in the art
they produce. * funded in part by the Pennsylvania

Are you considering counseling?
The Friends Counseling Service is composed of a number
of experienced, professionally-trained psychotherapists
who are geographically dispersed throughout the
yearly meeting area. All counselors are active
Friends whose spiritual lives are integral to their
approach to counseling. Confidential services are
provided to individuals, couples, and families,
according to the client's ability to pay. Service
is never denied because of a person's lack of means.
Anyone interested in counseling may either call
a counselor directly for an appointment or call Deborah
Cooper, the Counseling Service Consultant, at 215-248-0489,
to discuss counseling in general or to obtain an
appropriate referral.
STANDARD REMINDERS
Please help center Meeting for Worship:
Friends are invited to arrive early for meeting for
worship to help the meeting settle and provide a
more meaningful worship experience for children and
adults alike.
Assistive Listening Devices
A "hearing helper" system amplifies spoken
messages in meeting. These devices can also be used
for people in the gathering room who wish to hear
spoken messages in the worship room. Contact a member
of Worship and Ministry if you want to learn more.
On-line calendar for Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting
The on-line calendar can be viewed by clicking the
blue link or going to the meeting web page.
Bulletin announcements
Please submit copy-ready announcements to secretary@chestnuthillquakers.org or 215-247-3553 by Noon on Thursdays.
Use of Meeting House
The property committee reminds us that all meetings
or other gatherings at the Chestnut Hill meetinghouse
must be reserved and confirmed through the meeting
secretary before the events are publicly announced.
Review the on-line calendar as you plan your event.
Go to the meeting webpage and download a meetinghouse
use request form.
Complete the form and deliver it to the meeting office
(either in paper form or through a scanned image
sent via email).
The meeting secretary or someone from the property
committee will confirm the time and date of your
event and put it on the on-line calendar.
Leaving the Meetinghouse
Whenever you are the last one to leave the meetinghouse,
you must turn off lights and lock the doors. You
can lock the meetinghouse and leave even if you not
have a key. If you find yourself being the last to
leave the meetinghouse but do not have a key, lock
the other doors from the inside. Then, leave the
building through the door beside the "office." This
door can be opened from the inside but is always
locked from the outside. Please check the door from
the outside as you leave to be sure that the door
is tightly closed.
Please leave the meetinghouse at least as orderly
as you found it. The meetinghouse is used by several
groups throughout the week. In order to respect their
needs as well as ours, please move furniture back
to the way it was when you moved it for your use
and put all trash to the large can in the kitchen.
If the large can is full, please take the trash to
the dumpster across the driveway.
If you or your children remove things from the religious
education closets in the social room or the bookcases,
please return them. If you use dishes in the kitchen,
please wash, dry and put them away.
Stuff Left Around the Meetinghouse
"Stuff" has begun to appear in the meetinghouse.
The property committee is charged with keeping the
meetinghouse orderly and uses the tag sale to dispose
of things (coats, furniture, dishes) that have no
purpose. Please talk to someone from the property
committee if you need to leave something in the meetinghouse
and please label it (including a date when it will
be removed) so that we won't think it was intended
for the tag sale.
Standard Office Hours
Viv Hawkins, meeting secretary, is in the meetinghouse
on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 4:30.
