Minute on Prayer Vigil for Peace at Independence Mall

Since April 1999, members and attenders of the Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting have participated in and helped organize a weekly Sunday afternoon prayer vigil for peace at the Liberty Bell Pavilion on Independence Mall. These prayer vigils have provided an opportunity for our members and for others of many faiths to bear witness to their individual commitment to peace and nonviolence and to the commitment of Friends to the Peace Testimony.

In order to provide support and encouragement to the organizers, and assistance in maintaining the vigil, Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting agrees to take the vigil under the care of the meeting in the following manner:

  • Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting will be the applicant for the permit from the National Park Service that is required for the vigil.
  • Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting, through the P&SC Committee, will periodically consult with organizers of the vigil to insure that the vigil is carried out in a manner consistent with the practices of the Religious Society of Friends.
  • Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting, through its P&SC Committee, will provide spiritual support and guidance to the organizers on issues related to the conduct and continuation of the vigil or on other issues as the organizers may request.
  • Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting will forward this minute to the Philadelphia Quarter and recommends that the Quarter consider taking the vigil under its care at which time Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting would release the care of the vigil to the Quarter.
