Agate Passage Friends Meeting
Meeting for Worship for Business
March 21, 2004

Those in attendance: Bob Major, Eric Hoyte, Wendy McClure, Barbara Morrison, Daniel Burton, Gayle Henry, Virginia Hoyte, Dorothy T. Rana-Meadows, James W. Meadows, Roberta Wilson, Michael Moore, Ed Sheridan

1.       The Meeting opened in silence.

2.       Friends approved the minutes of the February Meeting for Worship for Business on 2.15.04

3.       The matter of the schedule for our Meeting for Business was discussed.  For some months now we have scheduled these meetings on a monthly basis.  Friends want to continue this schedule because it seems to meet our needs.  At our May Business Meeting we will discuss the schedule for the months of June, July and August.

4.       The matter of a presentation and discussion about racism and how it relates to Quakers was brought forward by Roberta Wilson.  A visiting Friend, Vanessa Julye, will be in our area for 2 weeks in May, at the invitation of UFM, for whom she is conducting workshops.  She is also available to lead us in a mini-workshop or discussion which focuses on her insights on racism,  her personal experiences as an African-American Friend, and queries that we might address regarding racism within our own Meeting.  There was strong support for having her lead a discussion or offer a workshop with us in May.  Friends approve of offering Vanessa Julye an honorarium of $300, which would come from our budget or from individual donations for this purpose.  Roberta Wilson will work out the agenda with Vanessa.

5.       Agate Passage State of Society Report for 2003 - Michael Moore brought forward a preliminary Revised Draft of the Report.  Comments were shared about the Revised Draft.  Michael and Ed will work on fine tuning the wording of the Revised Draft.  Michael will then forward the Report to the Quarterly Meeting.

6.       Agate Passage Children’s Program – Virginia Hoyte brought forward a report from our committee.  Judy Brown had written up a short report about the committee’s recent discussions and this was handed out.  Items included:

  • Welcoming new members and Re-welcoming old members.  They are working on specific plans that they would like the Meeting to consider this summer.
  • Children’s Program.  There will be a special emphasis on programs for children on the first Sunday of each month.  Two volunteers each month will have responsibility for preparing materials and working with the children.
  • Plans for a combined Easter and Spring Celebration on April 10th.  Friends are encouraged to bring flowers, food for the potluck and dyed eggs. A special program for children is planned during Worship, and this will be followed by an Easter egg hunt.

      7.    The meeting ended with silence.

Ed Sheridan, Acting Secretary for Judith Brown
