Agate Passage Friends Meeting, Meeting for Worship
with Attention to Business
August: 22, 2004
Present: Guest - Tracey Edou, Bob Major,
Wendy McClure, Barbara Morrison,
Gayle Henry, Millie Royce, Barbara Morrison, Nancy Brantingham, Judy
Brown,
Michael Moore, Clerk.
The Meeting began without silence, but Meeting for Worship had much
appreciated the quote given to us in ministry from Meister Eckhart:
Up then, noble soul!
Put on thy jumping shoes which are love and intuition
Overleap the worship of thy mental powers
Overlook thine own understanding
And spring into the heart of God!
Tracey Edou described to us her informal project entitled "Miles
for Muriel"
to help put her African associate Muriel through college. She
expects this
project to expand to help other children of AIDS. This project
follows
similar projects during the last 7 years in which this meeting helped
Tracey
care for other African children. Tracey asked meeting to sponsor
her
project by offering Tracey a non-profit organization which would allow
her
to solicit gifts in its name. The minute approved is:
Meeting accepted Tracy Edou's request that we set up a restricted fund
to
receive moneys for "Miles for Muriel" at least until January,
2005. This
would involve a partnership between our treasurers and Tracey to be
worked
out.
Treasurer's Report: The reports the assistant Treasurer Nancy
Brantingham
gave us (filed with the minutes) suggest that there is a short fall
anticipated between contributions and expenditures in the budget of
$850.
It was decided that at the September 12 and 19th Meetings we inform
Meeting
members and attenders of Meeting's need for funds so that persons are
aware.
People will be asked to give "From each according to his or her
means."
Minutes of the June Meeting were approved as submitted.
Announcements: Bob Major and Barbara Wolf have agreed to check the
supplies
kept in the building and keep them plentiful. Bob has contributed some
canisters for this purpose.
Ministry and Counsel recommends that Ed Sheridan's request for
membership be
accepted. The letter was read. It suggested that he has recognized
a
confluence with Friends testimonies and the aims of his life. His letter
is
on file with the minutes. The Clerk also read a poem by Mary Oliver
which Ed
gave us along with his letter. At Ed's request we will be acting upon
his
request at the October Meeting.
Peace and Social Concerns...A letter written to the Suquamish tribe from
Peace and Social Concerns committee for the Meeting was presented for
comments. While Meeting felt it was good to have contact with the tribe,
they felt this letter might be an overstatement. The general feeling was
that the letter should be rephrased and shorter. It should clearly say
that
we hope the tribe will continue to call upon Agate Passage Friends
Meeting
as they have in the past when they feel the need for support and
reconciliation in community issues which arise.
Nominating committee has been asked to find new leadership for the
Celebrations/Education committee and Anne Laird is convening the
committee.
There is also a need to replace Betty Petras who has had to resign from
the
Ministry and Counsel committee.
Discussion of the "Building Needs Committee" was postponed for
lack of time.
Meeting closed with silence at 1:15 p.m.
Judy Brown, Recording Clerk
