MINUTES, AGATE PASSAGE FRIENDS
June
18, 2006

Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business,

Seabold Hall

OPENING: Our Clerk, Judy Brown opened with a reading from Faith and Practice, which was followed by a short silence.

PRESENT:  Judy Brown, Clerk, Michael Moore, Bob and Millie Royce, Eric and Virginia Hoyte, Paul Larsen, Barbara Wolf, Kathryn Keve, Jim and Dorothy Rana-Meadows, Craig Jacobrown, Lucy Johnson, Bob Major, Lorena Bruff

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES:   The Minutes were approved with one slight correction.

TREASURER’S REPORT:    Out Treasurer, Michael Moore, passed out a report of our financial status with the good news that up to nearly mid-year now, we have received contributions almost exactly equaling half of our yearly estimated expenditures.

He asked that, if possible, the group today approve the expected Seabold Hall usage for the rest of 2006 so he can pay the rent.  The Meeting for Business did give their support to the proposed schedule as outlined on our Treasurer's Report with the following caution:  The hours designated specifically for the kid's programs be contingent on coming to consensus for an intergenerational experience.

Bob Major announced that for the time being he is paying for monthly ads in the Kitsap Sun papers.   He and all of us will asses their usefulness in the forthcoming months.

Our Treasurer also told us that for the time being he has ordered only the standard ad under “Churches” in the Dex and Sprint phone books.  This ad is free, but it does not specifically mention “Quakers”, only “Agate Passage Friends Meeting”.

FIRST DAY SCHOOL:  Following the “Threshing Session” at the Sheridan’s on June 11th to consider the needs of adult members in relation to our Meetings for Worship, the limitations of our present space, and the value of monthly programs that would draw young people to our community, the Meeting for Business continued to consider these issues.  A lively discussion for about forty minutes ensued, with differing needs and points of view brought up and thoughtfully considered.   As time was running short and a unified sense of the meeting did not seem to be emerging, our Clerk asked the group if they would be willing to agree on a three month summer trial of Roberta Wilson’s suggestions.  These included:

l.              The First Day Committee would prepare for an “Intergenerational      Meeting” on the 4th Sunday of the next three months, including June.

2.             During the summer in good weather, the focus would be on being outdoors, taking walks together, etc., (Befriending Creation.)

3.             This plan would allow that members and attenders who did not choose to participate with the children, could continue with silent worship either in the kitchen or the main Seabold Hall room, if the young people and adults were interacting outside.

4.              In the fall, after more experience with children and adults coming together outdoors or around a Quaker-related theme through stories, songs, plays or art, hopefully the group would then be ready to reach consensus on a plan for the rest of the year.   At that time the “Middle Path” and other suggestions would be considered once again.

Agreement was reached that we would continue with this plan for the next three months

SPONSORSHIP OF EVAN WELKIN TO ATTEND MIDDLE EAST YEARLY MEETING IN LEBANON.

The group agreed that Agate Passage Meeting would sponsor Evan Welkin in attending the Middle East Yearly Meeting in Lebanon this year and establish a conduit fund for contributions towards his expenses.

FOCUSING ON ONE QUERY A MONTH FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE MEETING FOR WORSHIP.  A number of members and attenders have mentioned to Ministry and Council members that they are missing the practice of addressing one query for the latter part of the Meeting for Worship once a month.  The group, however,  agreed to postpone considering this issue until our summer Meeting for Business in August , as we were running out of time to do it justice.

THE MEETING CLOSED WITH SILENCE AROUND 12:50 A.M.

                                                                        Virginia Hoyte, Recording Clerk
